Dear , welcome to the Personal Development Plan (PDP) The Personalised approach to Skills Development.

The Personal Development Plan (PDP), is a personalised approach which details the things that are meaningful to you and how best to represent your unique skills to employers. We have helped many students over the past 12-years to develop their skills and to support their career choice with informed decisions and knowledge.

Personal Development Plan

Once you register you are offered the opportunity to create a Personal Development plan (PDP) to help you to think about your future career in finance and to show evidence of the skills and knowledge that you develop in pursuit of that career. The PDP is completely unique to you. After an initial survey of your needs, a programme-mix of mentorship and self-study is provided which lasts six-weeks.

PDP CV Recommendations

The PDP provides the opportunity, for those of you who have registered, to have your CVs assessed and to have a 15-minute discussion on your career path and how you could maximise your job seeking opportunities. Personalising our approach to helping you is a core part of the PDP, and we offer you the opportunity to talk with us about your CV and plans for your career by booking a meeting slot with us.

We have helped many students over the past 10-years to more fully reflect their skills and to support their career choice with informed decisions and knowledge. Why does the PDP help?

The PDP is designed to assist you in pursuit of your career. It helps you to think critically about your future work and to help you to map a path towards it. It then enables you to target and learn useful skills that are relevant to your future career and to record relevant training and skills adoption. This verifiable record has several benefits including supporting applications for internship and jobs and assisting in the application for post MSc study.

What do Employers want?

From our discussions with industry professionals we have put together a range of knowledge and skills classes that would materially help graduate students to find jobs in areas highlighted in the table.

Each area of interest has specific skills and knowledge that employers would expect to see. The TTC Institute provides the opportunity to identify and learn these skills, to show evidence of case studies in these areas and to show verifiable and certified record of ability.

Identifying career paths

Not everyone has a clear picture of what they will be doing after graduation. While some may be on a set-course towards a certain career, many may be experimenting with options and not ready to make certain choices. The PDP provides the opportunity for you to think critically about your work-future and to look at different options that may be available to you before committing to a certain career path.

Recording Verifiable Skills

The PDP also consists of a record of your verifiable skills and practical educational attainment. These verifiable skills can be searched and confirmed by employers and other interested parties and remain in place as a permanent record.

The Structure of the PDP

There are four stages to the PDP:

Stage 1:
FACT FINDING

The initial stage of the PDP requires fact finding. From the outset, you provide a short summary, by email, of your potential career-path and your work to date in acquiring skills to support your choice. The PDP mentor then assembles information and insights into what skills you may need and how to acquire them. You also send your Resume/CV to us and we can help you to identify the skills you may have and those you need.

Stage 2:
ONLINE INTERVIEW WITH MENTOR

Having identified the skills that you will need to develop the mentor assembles resources you will need including a series of videos, documented materials, short courses and practical exercises that assist with skills acquisition.

Stage 3:
TAKE PRACTICAL SHORT COURSES

You then undertake a number of the practical courses hosted on the TTC Institute website and develop skills that suit your career choice.

Stage 4:
VERIFIABLE SKILLS AWARDS

Once you complete the tests, you then receive your PDP completion awards for each course you take  along with evidence of the set of verifiable skills that you have acquired.

What skills should I typically expect to learn?

Typical skills that students often develop in the PDP are:

  • Market Intelligence
  • Financial Platform skills
  • Portfolio modelling skills
  • Data manipulation skills
  • Data extraction skills
  • Data analysis skills
  • Research report writing skills
  • Market Research skills
  • Soft skills related to client interaction, successful negotiation and document preparation

The PDP initiative helps you to think critically about your career-path and to identify important skills that you will need to develop to support your choice. It then provides you with the tools and knowledge to gain them.

Please note: All modules undertaken, must be completed by the 10th April.

What is the idea behind developing a case study?

The idea behind developing a case study for the PDP is that you have an opportunity to show how you are researching areas of interest to you and converting your knowledge into practice. You can also use the case study in interview as evidence of your interest in the subject of your choice. By creating a case study in an area of interest that links in with your chosen career-path you are able to show the following:

1. You understand the scope of the knowledge and the types of skills related to your career path

2. You can explain, by example, what you have done to attain those skills

3. You can describe an interesting current example that fits in with your career path.

Creating the Case Study

You have an option to write a document of no more than four A4 pages that shows your knowledge, analysis and understanding of the subject in question. For example, if you choose the Wealth Management option you could prepare a study on ESG and how it relates to the development of portfolio investments that are marketable to clients who are keen on sustainable finance.

If you have chosen Asset Management for example, you could write a short case study on how Bloomberg Portfolio functions work and include some good screen shots to back up your study.

You must choose a topic that interests you and one that you may want to talk about at interview because the case study is a document that will support your interview process and will add to your employability.

What do I need to do?

In order to prepare our case study you need to do the following:

1. Think about your career choice and the types of knowledge and skills you will need to succeed.

2. Access the documents and suggestions on the TTC website PDP Career-Path pages

3. Prepare a 4-page A4 document with evidence of your knowledge of the chosen subject, include screen shots, and make it an interesting discussion.

4. Complete the document and email to [email protected]

5. You will then receive a review from an industry professional in your related field and a skills verification award when you have shown a good level of understanding of the career-path and an interesting case study!

Case Study Example: Abhinaba’s case study on oil markets

Abhi was interested in joining an oil trading company as an analyst and prepared a case study on the point when the oil price went negative earlier in 2020. His case study is included below. You can see from his case study that he recorded information that was likely to help him understand the price changes in oil and the situation and this document was evidence that he had studies the topic, understood it and was able to write about it intelligently and informatively. This is an example of the type of study you could do.

Summary

The case study is meant to give you the opportunity to look into an interesting subject related to your career path that, in turn, supports your job hunting by providing you with evidence of verifiable skills, understanding of the career-path you have chosen, and something to support you in your interviews.

The FTP and PDP use various Financial Platforms in their programmes including Bloomberg Pro, Refinitiv Workspace, TT Platform and S&P Capital IQ. Over the coming weeks we will be delivering a range of classes on how to use the Platforms.

The first of the classes is on Refinitiv Workspace and looks directly at ESG in Finance explaining where to find information and resources on Workspace and how professionals would use this information, particularly from a Wealth Management point of view. This class will be followed by others that focus on the various platforms we have.

All FTP and PDP students should have personal access to Refinitiv Workspace.

Work Assignment

Based on the class content and the information we went through on Refinitiv Workspace, describe how you would construct an ESG portfolio based on sustainable investing in your chosen field. This assignment should be no less than four 400 words and should show examples of the ways in which you have used Refinitiv Workspace to source your information, collate it, assess it and build your portfolio.

When you have completed the task please either submit your assignment below or email a pdf of your work to [email protected]

Once your work has been assessed and meets the required standard for passing, you will receive a verification award from TTC Institute.

Marks will be given for original work that utilises the information and resources of Refinitiv Workspace.

The passmark is 60% with added marks for portfolio examples which will need to be emailed to Amanda Kemp to accompany the submitted assignment.

Good luck!

Developing Market Intelligence skills is an important addition to the PDP skills programme. There is so much going in the markets at the moment with the events related to Covid 19 that the situation presents a unique learning opportunity. During the PDP development we encourage you to read widely, think carefully about topical issues and gather information and resources. In this section regarding Market Intelligence we will provide you with on-demand videos of useful topics and interesting areas of activity that will support your wider understanding of finance and financial markets.

PDP Skills: Class Assignment

Using the same Market Intelligence approach as we described in the class (the recording is below), write at least a paragraph each on three different Market Intelligence observations that you can make right now, and email the pdf of your word document back to me at [email protected]

Think about the current geopolitical, economic and corporate business situation and draw some insights using your market intelligence. You should add as much detail as is needed to describe the Market Intelligence observation you make and provide any charts/examples or other information to back up your assessment. Points will be awarded for providing a good range of supporting statements.
